Catalog Description

Same as COSC 311 with additional honors project.

Syllabus

Students in COSC 317 are expected to do all of the work required for students in COSC 311, which counts for 80% of their grade. In addition, COSC 317 students will receive special training in the practice of mathematics based in part on the “Moore method” of teaching mathematics to small numbers of talented students. Students will get practice in developing a mathematical discipline, including completing definitions, generating conjectures, inventing proofs, producing and checking examples, and solving problems. Every week or two, students present their work in progress, which is critiqued by the teacher and the other students. In Fall 2014 we will study several topics relevant to computer science: partial orders, lattice theory, and Boolean algebras.

Since COSC 317 will be taught for the first time in Fall 2014, all of this is subject to change. In particular, the mathematical topics may vary from semester to semester, since method is more important than specific content.
