TITLE: GRADUATE COURSE ON IMAGE SENSORS AND DIGITAL CAMERAS

Prof. Abbas El Gamal of Stanford University won the best paper
award for a graduate course at the
 Microelectronic Systems Education Conference .
He described a course which covers the topics of photodetectors,
CCDs, sensor signal-to-noise analysis, spatial resolution,
imaging optics, color processing and digital camera signal path
analysis. The depth of understanding by the students was
significantly enhanced by the availability of a camera simulator
developed at Stanford. This software (written in MATLAB)
provides models for the scene, the imaging optics and the sensor.
Student projects consisted of investigating pixel size tradeoffs,
comparing various sensor dynamic range scenarios and evaluating a
honey comb sensor array versus a conventional one. His
presentation slides are on the conference website.
