Sundance, Inc. offers a variety of hardware boards which combine
a Texas Instruments DSP chip with a Xilinx Virtex FPGA. For
example, the SMT335E-1000 is a double-width TIM board that
contains a 200 MHz C6201 fixed-point DSP and a Xilinx Virtex
XCV1000E. It can achieve 1600 MIPS peak performance and has a 16
MByte SDRAM as well as 2 MBytes of FLASH ROM for
configuration/booting. The board is priced at $5675 US. With a
XCV2000E, the board is priced at $7475.
When the sustained data-rate is more than 60Mbytes/sec, C6201 DSP
processors have problems keeping pace so the FPGA is used to
reduce the amount of data to that level. Sundance offers over 60
different modules, all with a Xilinx FPGA. The Xilinx Virtex
FPGAs have gained widespread acceptance in the DSP market
particularly for high-performance applications such as Software
Defined Radio, 3G infrastructure and Imaging.
