TITLE: BRAZIL ENHANCES MICROELECTRONICS
Brazil is enhancing its support for microelectronics by
establishing the Center for Excellence in Advanced Electronics
Technology -- CEITEC (Centro de Excelencia em Tecnologia
Eletronica Avancada). The first project of its kind in Latin
America, CEITEC will be a center for technological development,
integrated circuit small scale production and human resources
development in microelectronics. The project is coordinated by
the State Department of Science and Technology, but has a
national scope. CEITEC's headquarters are in Porto Alegre, the
Capital of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, and will operate as an
anchor institution for the National Microelectronics Program,
launched by the Brazilian Federal Government in July 2001. CEITEC
is based on a partnership between the government, universities
and research centers, and private enterprises, mainly Motorola.
