TITLE: ASIC and FPGA Markets
John Cooley in his email news group frequently comments on the
ASIC and FPGA marketplaces. He reported that Dataquest noted in
2001 that the ASIC market was $16.6 billion while the FPGA market
was $2.6 billion. At the same time, the 2001 ASIC EDA market was
$2.2 billion while the FPGA EDA market was $0.9 billion. Thus,
for every dollar spent on an ASIC project, roughly 12 cents of it
goes to an EDA vendor. For every dollar spent on a FPGA project,
roughly 34 cents goes to an EDA vendor. In fact, Xilinx and
Altera frequently offer their tools at no charge in order to
encourage designers to use FPGA devices.
