The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is  a  working  group  of
ISO/IEC  in  charge  of  the  development  of standards for coded
representation of digital audio and video. MPEG-1 is the standard
on  which  Video CD and MP3 are based.  MPEG-2 is the standard on
which digital television set top boxes and DVD are based.  MPEG-4
is the standard for multimedia for the fixed and mobile web.  The
complete software for MPEG-4 (14496-5) can be downloaded for free
along  with audio and video conformance bitstreams. MPEG-7 is the
standard for description and search of audio and visual  content.
Work  on  the  new  standard  MPEG-21  "Multimedia Framework" has
begun.

More than 180 million MPEG integrated  circuits  valued  at  $1.3
billion    were  shipped  last  year  in  MPEG-4  enabled  mobile
handsets, DVD players and recorders and  digital  TV  sets.   The
leading  suppliers  were  ST Microelectronics, ESS and LSI Logic.
In-Stat expects the MPEG IC market to more  than  double  in  the
next five years.
