TITLE: ARM to acquire Artisan

The well-known CPU core vendor, ARM, plans to acquire Artisan, a
standard-cell library developer. Artisan introduced its free
licensing model for libraries in cooperation with Taiwan
Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in the late 1990s.
TSMC gives Artisan libraries to its customers at no charge and
pays Artisan a royalty for every TSMC die built with the Artisan
libraries. The ARM architecture has generally been considered
the leader in terms of performance-per-watt. The acquisition
should allow ARM to implement its architecture more efficiently
at the 90-nanometer node with Artisan libraries and make
it easier for partners to get to production with reduced risk.
