The IEEE continues to publish the most well-respected journals in
the category of electrical and electronics engineering, according
to the Institute of Scientific Information's newly released 1998
Journal Citation Reports.
The study ranked 205 electrical engineering periodicals on the
number of times they were cited in scientific literature. The
IEEE "Transactions on Medical Imaging" was the most highly cited
journal, with had 2,107 citations. Overall, the IEEE had eight
out of the top ten, and 40 of the top 60 cited journals.
The study also demonstrated the staying power of IEEE
publications. Half of the citations from the following journals
were from issues published ten or more years ago: "Proceedings of
the IEEE," "Transactions on Computers," and "Transactions on
Reliability."
The study also ranks journals according to subject categories
within computer science and electrical engineering. IEEE journals
took top honors in three categories: "Journal on Selected Areas
in Communications" (telecommunications); "Journal on Parallel
Distributions" (computer science, theory & method); and
"Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing" (manufacturing).
