TITLE: DIGITAL IMAGING INTEGRATED CIRCUITS
For almost two decades, Zoran Corp. has been leveraging its
expertise in digital compression and decompression to produce
integrated circuits that are in numerous digital camera and DVD
products. In the case of a camera, the image is sensed and then
compressed into memory. For example, with a 32-MByte flash
memory card, the Ricoh RDC-6000 can hold up to 800 pictures at is
lowest resolution of 640x480 or about 50 images at its highest
resolution of 1600x1200. Using mathematical interpolation, the
camera resolution can be made effectively into 2000x1500. The
stored images are decompressed for viewing. In the case of DVD,
streams of images are compressed and then stored on the magnetic
media. When retrieved by a DVD player, the images are
decompressed for viewing.
Historically, Zoran chips have used JPEG techniques but MPEG-4
chips are being developed now with its recent merger with
Nogatech. One product already on the market allows consumers to
capture analog video from a traditional camcorder or VCR, convert
it into digital form and then compress it for input to a PC via a
USB port. For additional information, access: Zoran
