The vast majority of existing computers are not desktop or laptop
machines   but   are   embedded  components  in  numerous  system
applications  such  as  automobiles,  cell  phones  and  internet
routers.   This  emerging  field  which  generally  requires both
hardware and software now has a landmark text (described  below),

(www.esconline.com) dedicated to it.  In addition, the  technical
program at the annual Design Automation Conference emphasizes the
importance of embedded system design.

"Computers As Components: Principles of Embedded  System  Design"
by  Prof.   Wayne  Wolf  of  Princeton  University  describes the
concepts and techniques of embedded systems using case studies on
the  ARM  general-purpose  microprocessor  and  the SHARC digital
signal processor.  Example applications such as software  modems,
telephone   answering   machines   and   video  accelerators  are
presented.  The basics of the Unified Modeling Language are given
