• Stac Compression Software was included in MS-DOS 6.0 (illegally)
• Stac was awarded $120 million in a lawsuit and it was removed from the next release

Internet Running Out of Space?

• IPv4 protocal
• Projected to run out of space by 2008
• They didn't account for tvs and other devices having ip addresses
• Solution was IPv6

TCP/IP Becoming Leading Protocol

• Companies making it the de facto standard
• Microsoft providing access to 32 bit drivers
• Apple providing native support in OS
• Competing protocol was IPX/SPX by Novell Inc.

Microsoft Antitrust Case

• Built by the DOJ on the tails of what the FTC did in years prior
• Microsoft settled before it went to trial
• Agreed not to bundle in other Microsoft products with Windows

Old IBM Antitrust case

• A 1956 antitrust case still restricting IBM
• They were still being restriced on the ability to outsource
• IBM's argument was that they no long dominated the industry

Talk of Windows 4.0

• Codename Chicago
• Controversial NDA - stated companies couldn't work on competing products for 3 years
• Ultimatly delayed and became Windows 95

Windows NT

• Came out in 1993
• Microsoft tries to push it throughout the year
• Overall it was a letdown, people stuck with the Unix systems

Beginnings of the 64 bit CPU

• HP and Intel team up to research a 64 bit CPU
• Intel invested 8.9 billion and HP 20.3 billion

New Technology Helping Police

• Police cruisers outfitted with computers
• Could wirelessly access crime databases

Internet Games Dooming Networks

• Doom was outlawed by Universities and Companies accross the US
• It clogged up and brought down networks by broadcasting packets to every computer on the network
