Workshop Synopsis
The goal of
this working workshop is to hold a small-group discussion aimed at
collaboratively outlining a roadmap toward Human-Level AI (HLAI) based on a
broadly agreed-upon set of assumptions. Participants will not be presenting
material, but are rather expected to take an active part in the discussions. We
expect one of the outcomes of the event to be a published manuscript
co-authored by the participants.

Reference material
The
following material has been put forward by participants of the workshop for
promoting the discussions. Please review this material prior to attending the
workshop:
·
The AGI Roadmap webpage is a general resource
for activities pertaining to the theme of the workshop.
·
A preliminary draft for a
possible AGI roadmap, which may serve as basis for discussion, can be found here.
·
A paper arguing for the value of taking a
developmental perspective in AI (suggested
by Matt Schlesinger).
·
A keynote address delivered by
Stan Franklin at the first conference on Artificial General Intelligence (2006)
{video and PDF available at here} was
intended to provide a working ontology for AGI, that is a coherent beginning
vocabulary from which to discuss AGI topics.
·
John Sowa has contributed a paradigm paper where he outlines an
approach to AGI which is influenced by Minsky’s Society of Mind.
·
Sam Adams has suggested a paper
he co-authored on the topic of “Beyond
the Turing Test”
·
Marvin Minsky’s paper on Steps Toward
Artificial Intelligence remains an important reference on the topic.
·
Ben Goerztel’s AGI Preschool paper
provides a suggested framework to guide some of the discussion on the AGI
Roadmap.
Workshop Venue
·
The workshop will be held in 319
Perkins Hall on campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. A map of the
campus is available at UTK campus map.
·
The conference hotel is the Four
Points by Sheraton Knoxville Cumberland House Hotel, which is a walking
distance from campus and the meeting venue, as well as the downtown area that
hosts restaurants and other attractions.
·
Travel arrangements will be made
by the participants and covered by the workshop.
·
It is assumed that most
participants will be arriving on Friday (Oct 23) and returning on Sunday night
(Oct 25). If you have other travel needs, please indicate so. The Knoxville airport (TYS) is a 15 minutes drive
from the campus of the University of Tennessee.
