Prof. Sun received his B.S. in Automation (1999) and Ph.D. in Control Science & Engineering (2004) both from Tsinghua University, Beijing. Before joining UTK, he was a Project Manager with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, CA for R&D programs in Grid Operations and Planning from 2007 to 2012. He conducted postdoctoral studies at Arizona State University (2006-2007) and the University of Western Ontario (2005). Prof. Sun was a visiting scholar at Harvard University in 2019-2020.
Prof. Sun is currently an associate editor with IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy and IEEE Access, and he is a faculty Member of NSF/DOE engineering research center CURENT. Prof. Sun is a recipient of 2016 NSF CAREER award.
His research interests include stability,
dynamics and control of power grids and other complex systems.
9/2020: Xin Xu passed his dissertation defense titled "Stability Analysis and Control of Nonlinear Power System Oscillations". Congratuations to Dr. Xu!
8/2020: Tianwei Xia's paper titled "Extended Prony Analysis on Power System Oscillation Under a Near-Resonance Condition" received the Best Papers award by 2020 IEEE PES general meeting. Three other conference papers from Dr. Sun's group were presented at the meeting.
