Abstract Over the past years power and energy consumption have become the driving metrics for the design of computing hardware including multicore CPUs and accelerators. Power-conscious designs also dominate large supercomputing installations as well as large industrial complexes devoted to cloud computing and big data analytics. With serious financial and environmental consequences, large scale computing community has to now cope with careful re-engineering of software to fit demanding power levels and tight energy envelopes.
