CS 620 - Research Group Meeting

Description

CS 620 is not a class; it's actually just a regular meeting for my research group, including my MS and PhD students, so that we can keep in touch with each other's work and discuss research issues.

Thus there is no syllabus, no requirements and no particular goal.

We discuss our research accomplishments and goals, so that we are aware of what each other is doing and so that the research programme is coordinated. We sometimes read and discuss papers on topics relevant to my research programme. Or we may present and critique preliminary versions of our papers or proposals.

Generally we meet for 2-3 hours once a week.

If you are considering doing research with me, please contact me for additional information. For more information on my research, visit my research page.

News

Since the primary purpose of the meeting is to coordinate the research of students working with me, the meetings will be structured around research presentations/discussions.

The first week or two of the semester I will give a general orientation to my research programme for the sake of new students and as a refresher for those who have been working with me awhile. After that each of you will be expected to make a presentation and/or lead a discussion (generally an hour in length) on a topic relevant to your research with me. Of necessity, the earlier presentations/discussions will be by those of you with work in progress, and will most likely deal with work already accomplished and/or future work or research issues. As in the past, the seminar can also be used to obtain critical comments on papers or presentations that you are preparing. If you have just begun to work with me and have not settled on a research project, you will be able to do your presentation/discussion later in the semester, when you have settled on a topic. If you don't have a specific topic, then you can do a survey of an area that you are studying.

On the average everyone should go once and we should have one or two of you per week, but we will not adhere rigidly to that schedule.
