CS360 Midterm -- October 15, 2002. Grading.

Procedure 1 was worth 3 points. Only one point if you gave something equivalent that could not have been produced by a compiler (i.e. it was optimized or otherwise confused).
Procedure 2 was worth 4.5 points: 1.5 for each statement. You only received 1.5 if you did something equivalent that could not have been produced by a compiler.
Procedure 3 was worth 3 points. There were three main deductions:
- Adding three instead of twelve.
- Forgetting the last dereference (returning i[3] rather than *i[3]).
- Not spilling if you used r2 or r3.
- Misloading i.
The first deduction was worth 1 point. Remaining deductions were 0.5 each.
Procedure 4 was worth 6.5 points. Here were the categories:
- Step 1: Multiplying j and 3: 0.5 point
- Step 2: Multiplying k and 5: 0.5 points
- Step 3: Adding the results: 0.5 points
- Step 4: Multiplying by 4 and adding it to i: 1 point
- Step 5: Dereferencing that quantity: 0.5 point
- Step 6: Subtracting 3 from m: 0.5 points
- Step 7: Multiplying that by 4 and adding it to i[3j+5k]: 1 point
- Step 8: Dereferencing the result into r0 and returning: 1 point
- Proper spilling: 1 point
As with most coding questions, if you had issues (twisted logic, mostly, or complete gibberish), I deducted points from your total corresponding to how coherent your code appeared. This could be anything from 0.5 to 8 points.

Calling opendir() and checking for errors: 1 point
Doing the readdir() loop correctly: 1 point
Calling stat() or lstat() and checking for errors: 1 point
Checking for `.' in the first character of the filename: 1 point. If you checked whether the filename equaled `.' or `..' you only received 0.25 points.
Correct insertion into the first-level tree: 1.5 points
Correct insertion into the second-level tree: 1 point
Calling strdup() when inserting into the second-level tree: 1 point
Correct traversal of the two-level tree: 1.5 points

Stating that the setuid bit is part of the file's inode/prot bits: 1 point
Stating that the setuid bit turns the process' user id to be the file's owner: 2 points
Stating that you write a program to print out the first line: 1 point
Stating that you set the setuid bit of that program: 0.5 points
Stating that you set protection of the file to 0400 or 0600: 0.5 points
Stating that you should hard code the pathname: 1 point
Some text about what you'd do otherwise: 1 point
