This is from the origami mailing list -- July 11, 1994. From Jeanning Mosely (j9@concentra.com). I include instructions for the small and great stellated dodecahedron, made from the same module (30 for each). They are astonishingly easy -- only seven creases per module. They make wonderful holiday decorations when made from gold or silver foil. (I usually give one at Christmas to my son's school teacher.) -- Jeannine ---------------------------------------------------------------- I'd just like to mention that Roberto Morassi also discovered this module independently -- it is published in a book by Fuse on international modular origami. I'm not sure of the book's exact title. -- Jeannine ---------------------------------------------------------------- Great and Small Stellated Dodecahedra Make thirty of the units described below. Assemble them by sticking the flaps into the pockets. To make the small stellated dodecahedron, assemble the units so that 5 isoceles triangles come together at each point. To make the great stellated dodecahedron, assemble the units so that 3 isoceles triangles come together at each point. Please note that ideally, the isoceles triangles should have angles that are 72, 72 and 36 degrees. The construction given produces base angles that are actually 71.56 degrees. But I don't think many of us can fold that accurately, anyway. Enjoy! Fold a square in thirds, making one fold a valley fold, the other a mountain fold. ____________________ ______ A' | * * | | | | * | | | | | * * | | | | * | | | | | * * | | | | v* m| | ==> | | | * * | | | | * | | | | | * * | | | | * | | | | |______*______*______| |______| A Fold the lower left-hand corner A up to touch the upper right-hand corner A'. /\ / / \ / / \ / / \ / / \ \ / / \ / / \ / / \/_________________/ Unfold. _______ A' | | | | | | | | B'|\ | | \ | | \ | | \|B | | | | | | |_______| A Make mountain folds between A and B, and between A' and B'.
