CS 370 - Course Grades and Policies

The instructor reserves the right to give higher grades on an individual basis to students who show significant progress during the semester, participate actively in class and the labs, etc.

Point Accumulations
Homework - Students can obtain a total of 250 points on assigned homework problems. Each assignment will be comprised of several problems (with specified point values) and a student may hand-in as many of the assigned problems as desired. Once the threshold of 250 points has been achieved, each increment of 10 points above 250 will add one point to the Final Exam grade. Hence, a total of 276 points will yield 2 extra credit points for the Final Exam. It is expected that approximately 300 points will be assigned.

Labs - Similar to the homework scenario described above, each student will be be able to accrue a total of 225 points by the end of the semester. For each lab session (Wednesdays, 11:15am-2:15pm, Cetus Lab), a student may submit any number of assigned programming exercises for that lab session. Penalities will be given for programming exercises turned in after 10:00pm on Sunday following the lab session for which it is assigned. (See below.) Extra lab points will net (as with the homework) extra credit points for the Final Exam. A total of 260 lab points would produce 3 extra credit points for the Final Exam, for example. It is expected that approximately 275 points will be assigned.

Absences

Class/Homework - if you miss a class, you are still responsible for the material covered in the lecture and any assignment that is made. Your absence does not change the due date of any assignment.

Exams - no makeup examinations will be given unless an outstandingly acceptable reason is presented to the instructor before the scheduled examination date.

Labs - if you miss a lab, you are still responsible for the material covered in that lab session and for turning in the required assignment on time.

Due Date Policy
Homework - all homework assignments must be submitted in written form and are due at the beginning of class on the specified due date. NO LATE HOMEWORK ASSIGMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Labs - all laboratory assignments are due at 10:00 pm on Sunday following the lab session for which it is assigned. If a lab assignment is not submitted by the due date, the grade for that lab will be reduced 25% per day late. With extremely strong justification, a student may obtain approval from the instructor prior to the beginning of the lab for submitting a lab assignment late. In this case late penalities will based upon the delayed due date. Given the 4-day delay from lab session to due date, employment responsibilities or illness or internet failure or most any other excuse will not be accepted. Don't wait until the last hour to turn in assignments. This policy will be strictly enforced (no exceptions).

Assistance Policy
You should research and study the material yourself before seeking help from any one! After reasonable individual effort, assistance should be sought from the TA, Lecturer, or Instructor. If you do not understand the material, please seek help; do not let material not mastered accumulate.

You may discuss homework and lab assignments with other students in the class; however, you MUST perform all the actual work (programming, mathematics, analyses, reports, etc.) yourself. (A good rule of thumb is that if, while you are programming or writing up your work, you can see someone else's work, you are on very questionable ground.) Cheating will not be tolerated! The result of cheating will be a zero for the assignment, written notification given to the student, Department Head, and Dean of Students, and may well result in a final grade of F for the entire course.

Special Needs
If a student has any condition, such as a physical or mental disability, that will make it difficult to carry out any assignment or that will require extra time on examinations or laboratory assignments, please notify the instructor in the first two weeks of the course. Any student with permit from the Office of Disability Services will be provided reasonable accommodation.
