Remote Access to emergent

Information
Introduction
If you are unable to install emergent on your personal
computer (preferred), you can run it on one of the EECS Department’s
remote Windows desktops (rd0 – rd3.eecs.utk.edu). Following is the
procedure.
Steps
- If you want to use the remote desktops from off campus, you
will need to have a Virtual Private Network (VPN) installed. If
you do not have one already, go to: https://help.utk.edu/kb/index2.php?func=show&e=2544
to find out how. Make sure the Pulse Secure VPN
application is launched before you try to connect.
- If necessary, install Microsoft Remote Desktop.
- It’s built into Windows, so you don't have to install it.
- Here is the Mac version: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/microsoft-remote-desktop/id715768417?mt=12
(free).
- For linux, it is probably built in, but some command-line
choices include rdesktop and xfreerdp. You
also might try going to https://access.utk.edu/,
logging in, and starting “Network Connect”.
- If off campus, launch Pulse Secure and click Connect
on UTK VPN.
- Launch Microsoft Remote Desktop.
- Select New and enter the name of the system (one of rd0 –
rd3.eecs.utk.edu).
- You can put your username (UTK\netid) and password in there or
leave it blank and be prompted. You can also select screen size
defaults etc. Save this desktop information so that it in the
future you can just click on it.
- Double click on your saved remote desktop to connect to it.
- After accepting a couple conditions you will be on the Windows
desktop.
- There is a shortcut to emergent on the desktop.
- You can use the browsers to get to the emergent
projects and data files online and to put them in your Windows
files. However, save your work in your H: (aka T-Storage) drive,
where you have 50GB of backed up storage. EECS provides far less
storage on the local drive itself and it’s not backed up (so in
case of disk failure, you could lose it).
- When you are done using emergent, log off of Windows.
- Quit Windows Remote Desktop.
- Disconnect and quit Pulse Secure (if running).
If you have problems with the RD servers, contact ithelp@eecs.utk.edu.
