CS361: Operating System
Michael Peirce - ComputerWorld 1996
CD-ROM Flips Floppy
- Microsoft laying off 120 employees at its Floppy Disk Manufacturing Plant helps support the prediction that CD-ROMs are taking over for Floppy Disks.
- 30% of retail software sales were CD-ROM in 1995, jumped to 60% in 1996.
- CD-ROMs have a faster install rate, and since they are read-only users can<92>t put viruses on them.
- CD-ROMs were cheaper to make, and thus prices for them were also cheaper to the user.
The Year 2000
- Various ads throughout the paper advertising companies that use year 2000 compatible equipment.
IMAP4
- An alternative to the Post Office Protacol3 (POP3) which works best for a single machine.
- Allows a user to Access mail from multiple computers, download it to a client or just parts of the message. This allowed for a server to store the main copy. $159-199
Doctors
- University of Utah students work to combine OpenDoc and JavaBeans to create an updatable application for doctors.
- This allowed physician assistants to see patients and diagnose them, thus increasing the number of people that could be seen.
- Works by having doctor or nurse put the patient<92>s symptoms into the computer and it would return recommendations of which tests to run and other symptoms to watch out for.
NoMore #*!$ Viruses
- The name of this software is pronounced <93>no more blanket-blank viruses<94> and was created by the RG Software
- This program works by installing itself as the first line in the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, so it executes before any other code is loaded. At boot-up, it compares the boot-up record with a previous snapshot and notes any changes. It deletes itself from memory after it runs.
- Used to find boot-sector viruses.
- It runs at boot time so the user doesn<92>t have to worry about doing it and it doesn<92>t rely upon looking for a unique signature left by a virus so it doesn<92>t need to be updated.
- Doesn<92>t catch file-infector or macro viruses so regular scans still need to be done.
Java
- The problem with Java is that it is slow to run and doesn<92>t work with most web browsers.
- Microsoft and Netscape race to make web browser plug-ins for the java virtual machine to be able to run with the browser at a fast rate.
Work
- Average salary of $40,000 to $50,000.
- Companies are looking for COBOL and CICS for the database/server mainframes.
- Application programmers need to know C and C++.
