Toffee Bars
From The Fannie Farmer Baking Book, Marion Cunningham, Knopf, 1984.
Makes 16 bars.
Ingredients
- 10 tablespoons (1 1/4sticks) butter, softened
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 4 ounces semisweet chocolate
- 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts
Directions
Preheat the over to 350F and get out an 8~inch square baking pan.
Combine 8 tablespoons of the butter, the brown sugar and vanilla, and
beat together until completely mixed. Press the mixture evenly in the
bottom of the baking pan and bake for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and
cool in the pan on a rack.
Melt the chocolate and remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in a small
cup or bowl set in a larger pan of simmering water, stirring occasionally.
Set aside to cool.
Spread the cooled chocolate over the crust, swirling it slightly with a
knife or the back of a spoon. Sprinkle on the chopped nuts and press.
Chill. Cut with a thin, sharp knife.
