TITLE: INTEGRATING CAD TOOLS FOR RAPID SOC IMPLEMENTATION

A recent Ph.D. dissertation that describes in detail the
integration of numerous CAD tools is now on-line at: Dissertation

The author, Dr. Rhett Davis, now a post-doctoral researcher at
the Berkeley Wireless Research Center at the University of
California, Berkeley, is part of a large team involved in
developing next generation wireless communication devices which
have RF, analog and digital processing functions on a single
integrated circuit. Rapid design exploration and implementation
of such a complex system-on-chip (SoC) necessitated the
development of a "push button" IC design flow. This goal was
achieved using a scripted path from Simulink to layout,
producing ICs that have predictable delays and hence timing
closure.

The author gives an excellent overview of CAD tools from a
variety of companies and provides detailed rationale for the
selection of those tools included in this new flow. He also
provides descriptions of the nuances encountered in integrating
tools which were developed by companies using disparate formats.

Additional papers and presentations describing this new
methodology may be found at: BWRC and in this newsletter.
