Are you an undergraduate interested in research?

Tennessee Bioinformatics@UTK (UTB) is always looking for talented students to work on one of our projects for research credit or sometimes for an hourly wage. We also often (and have a USDA REU site funded) to host 1-2 undergraduate students over the summer providing a stipend, housing for ~10 weeks and other expenses.

If you are not a Tennessee - Knoxville student but are interested in summer undergraduate research in our group, please send us email with a brief summary of (1) why you are interested in our research; and (2) what prior experience you may have with programming and/or bioinformatics. We have active projects related to sequence analysis, algorithm development, and informatics we'd love to involve you on. Prior experience in biology is helpful but not required.

Interested in graduate school in bioinformatics?

Hopefully you have reviewed this site and ideally read a few of our publications and persued some of our active projects.

We are always looking for talented graduate students (PhD and sometimes MS) and although prior knowledge of bioinformatics and/or biology would be helpful, is not required to join the group. Research often follows a multidisciplinary model where a PhD is developed by solving important problems in close collaboration with our experimentalist collegues (e.g., Fred Brooks' Driving Problem paradigm). For this reason we strongly encourage you to read Brooks' "Computer Scientists as Toolsmith" (especially the Toolsmith as Collaborator section) to get a sense of our research philosophy and if PhD research here is of interest. If so, please email your CV (or equivalent) and a brief description on why you would like to work with us either before or shortly after your application. Students with pending applications, however, will receive much higher priority for consideration.
